Brittany is the birthplace of thalassotherapy. Thalasso Bretagne brings together the region's 13 centres located along the coast from St-Malo to La Baule. The association's aim is to promote thalassotherapy in Brittany – both in France and beyond – and to rigorously monitor the professionalism and quality of treatments received in each establishment.
Establishments must adhere to the following basic criteria to be recognised as a Centre de Thalasso:
- Be located on the coast a maximum of 400m away from the water level at high tide
- Use natural seawater
- Use fresh seawater for each treatment
- Constantly monitor seawater quality
- Be able to react immediately in case of any abnormal rise in sea level
- Use products made with natural marine extracts
- Offer a seawater swimming pool
- Have a minimum of 20 treatment rooms
And have at least one on-site doctor.
